Whether designing something entirely from scratch or repurposing inherited pieces of jewelry, custom design offers the opportunity to honor the past while creating something deeply personal for the present. It is a thoughtful way to celebrate milestones, preserve family history, and ensure that what you wear reflects both craftsmanship and purpose.

But, like all good things, it takes time to design, refine, and create the custom jewelry piece of your dreams. For wedding rings, earrings, bracelets, and everything else in between, here’s what the process looks like at JPratt Designs.

How Long Does the Custom Jewelry Process Take?

The timeline for custom jewelry depends on the scope of the project, of course, but generally we estimate 8-11 weeks for a fully custom piece. Certain projects may be completed in a tighter timeframe, but as a general rule, custom jewelry is best approached with an “all good things take time” mindset.

As you’ll see below when we discuss all that’s involved in the custom jewelry design process, each phase of the project serves a specific purpose (and requires dedicated time). Certain factors can influence the speed at which the project progresses. A complex design will, naturally, take longer to create. And if a piece has numerous or rare gemstones, it may take time to source those jewels.

It’s also important to keep in mind the timing of the project. Production volume naturally increases around the holidays, especially Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

How Does the Custom Jewelry Design Process Work?

First Appointment: Design Consultation, Concept Development, and Material Section

The custom jewelry design process truly begins with an in-depth consultation. At JPratt Designs, consultations are typically booked for about two hours, not because every appointment will require the full time, but because we never want clients to feel rushed. Custom jewelry is personal, and choosing the right design, diamond, gemstone, or metal should feel informed and comfortable from the very beginning.

During this appointment, we discuss your inspiration, intended wear, budget considerations, and any existing gemstones or pieces of jewelry you wish to incorporate. Consultations can happen in person or online, depending on your preference, though many clients enjoy being able to see stones, materials, and design options in person.

Concept Development

In many cases, the design begins taking shape during this first appointment. As ideas are discussed, the team can often sketch or develop the initial concept while the client is present. Occasionally, if the design is especially complex, the appointment is short on time, or the client prefers not to wait, the design may be refined afterward and shared at a later point.

Stone Selection and Material Choices

Stone selection and material choices are also often part of this first appointment. Whether you are choosing a birthstone, a classic diamond, or something more unique, JPratt Designs helps guide you through the options with clarity and care. For diamond purchases in particular, this includes education on how to evaluate a stone beyond the certificate alone. Understanding the 4 Cs is helpful, but the goal is to help clients learn what matters most to them, what they can see with their own eyes, and what will feel meaningful in the finished piece.

This guidance is especially valuable for clients making one of their first major jewelry purchases, such as an engagement ring. Rather than simply presenting options, JPratt Designs helps clients feel confident in their decision, understand the differences between stones, and choose a diamond or gemstone that aligns with both their preferences and their budget.

Once the design direction is established, clients will also consider precious metals such as gold or platinum. These choices impact both durability and aesthetic, ensuring the custom piece is as practical as it is beautiful.

Carving the Wax Model and Creating the Casting

When it’s time to carve the wax model and create the casting, we get our hands dirty — literally. Each wax is hand-carved with careful attention to proportion, detail, and the final vision for the piece. Depending on the complexity of the design, this carving process may take as little as an hour and a half or more than 25 hours for highly detailed pieces.

Once the wax is complete, it is sent to JPratt Designs’ casting partner in Portland, Oregon. This step typically takes about 7-10 days from the time the wax is sent out to the time the casting is received back. Working with an exceptional caster matters because a clean, precise casting creates the strongest foundation for a beautifully finished piece.

After the casting returns, the piece is ready to move into the final stages of polishing, stone setting, and finishing.

Polishing, Setting, and Finishing the Design

After the metal cools, the mold is broken away, and the rough casting is revealed. This is where craftsmanship truly takes center stage. The finishing timeline depends on the complexity of the piece, the number and type of gemstones, and whether additional details such as engraving or appraisal are needed.

During this stage, skilled craftsmen refine the casting, set gemstones, polish surfaces, and complete any engraving or personalized details. Some simpler pieces may move through this stage quickly, while more detailed designs require additional time, care, and coordination.

JPratt Designs works with trusted specialists across the custom jewelry process, including expert stone setters, engravers, appraisers, and other craftsmen. While the hands-on work itself may be measured in hours, each piece must also be thoughtfully scheduled within these artisans’ timelines. Depending on the scope of the project and the services involved, this stage can take anywhere from several days to several weeks.

Engraving can include dates, initials, or meaningful phrases, adding another layer of significance to the final piece. Before the finished design is presented, every detail is evaluated to ensure harmony between the stones, settings, and metalwork, and to confirm the piece meets JPratt Designs’ standards of excellence.
